Is It Worth Repairing a 5-Year-Old Laptop?

The honest answer isn't always 'buy new.' Here's a framework we use every day in our repair shop to help customers make the right call.

This is the question we hear more than any other. Someone walks into our shop in Reno with a laptop that's seen better days, and the first thing they ask is: "Is it even worth fixing?"

After repairing thousands of laptops since 2008, we've developed a simple mental framework. It takes about 30 seconds.

The 40% Rule

If the repair cost is more than 40% of what a comparable new laptop costs, you should probably sell or recycle it instead. Here's why that number works: a repaired 5-year-old laptop gives you maybe 2-3 more years. A new one gives you 5-7. The per-year cost needs to make sense.

A $200 repair on a laptop you'd replace with a $500 machine? That's 40% β€” right at the line. You'd get 2-3 more years for $200. A new one costs $500 for 5-7 years. At that price, the repair makes sense.

A $400 repair on the same laptop? That's 80%. Buy new.

Repairs That Almost Always Make Sense

SSD upgrade ($80-150 installed): This is the single best bang-for-buck repair. A 5-year-old laptop with an SSD feels like a new machine. Boot time drops from 2 minutes to 15 seconds. Apps launch instantly. If your laptop has a spinning hard drive and you're frustrated by speed, this is probably all you need. We do these same-day in our Reno shop.

Battery replacement ($50-120 installed): If your laptop dies after 30 minutes unplugged but works fine when plugged in, a battery swap brings it back to life. Simple repair, huge quality-of-life improvement.

RAM upgrade ($40-80 installed): If you're running 4GB of RAM in 2026, upgrading to 8GB or 16GB makes a noticeable difference. Especially if you keep a lot of browser tabs open (we see you, Chrome users).

Virus/malware removal ($89/hr): A slow laptop isn't always a hardware problem. Sometimes it's just bogged down with junk software, malware, or a bloated Windows install. A professional cleanup can make it feel brand new. We see this constantly β€” people ready to buy new when all they needed was a good cleaning.

Repairs That Rarely Make Sense After 5 Years

Motherboard replacement ($300-600): At this cost, you're better off putting that money toward a new machine.

Screen replacement on budget laptops ($150-250): If the laptop cost $400 new and it's 5 years old, spending $200 on a screen doesn't add up. That said, a cracked screen on a MacBook Pro or premium business laptop? That repair often makes sense because the machine is still worth $800+ when working.

Multiple repairs stacking up: If you need a screen AND a battery AND a keyboard, the total often crosses the 40% threshold. Better to cut your losses.

What If It's Not Worth Repairing?
